Plug-In Solar Becomes Legal in Great Britain

A significant change to UK solar regulations comes into effect 27 August 2026, making approved plug-in solar systems legal across Great Britain.

Often called “balcony solar”, these systems allow homeowners to generate renewable electricity using compact solar panels connected to a standard household socket. The new rules are expected to make solar power more accessible, particularly for people without suitable roof space for a traditional solar PV installation.

What Are the New Rules?

Under the new regulations:

• Approved plug-in solar systems can be legally connected to a standard UK socket.
• Installation is permitted for compliant systems.
• Inverter output is limited to 800W AC.
• Systems can include up to 2,000W of solar panels, provided inverter output remains within the 800W limit.
• Batteries are not included within the simplified plug-in solar framework.
• Homeowners must still notify their local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) through the G98 process.
• Planning permission will not normally be required, although restrictions may apply to listed buildings and some conservation areas.
• Only approved systems meeting the government’s product specification can be used.

What Does This Mean for Homeowners?

The new regulations create a lower-cost entry point into solar energy. Compliant plug-in solar kits are expected to cost between £400 and £1,000 and can be installed on balconies, shed roofs, garden structures or suitable wall-mounted frames.

Once installed and connected, the electricity generated can help reduce the amount of power imported from the grid, lowering household energy bills.

Industry estimates suggest savings of around £70 to £110 per year, depending on the size of the system, energy usage and local conditions.

Plug-In Solar vs Traditional Solar PV

While plug-in solar offers an affordable way to start generating renewable electricity, it is important to understand its limitations.

An 800W plug-in system can help offset daytime electricity consumption, but it cannot match the generation capacity and long-term savings of a professionally designed rooftop solar PV installation.

For homeowners with suitable roof space, a full solar PV system will still provide the greatest return on investment and the largest reduction in electricity bills.
